Review: Boettcher Teachers Program

Degree Offered: Urban Teacher Residency Format: Campus
Program Description: Program overview: Established in 2003, the Boettcher Teachers Program is an intensive, residency-based, dual licensure and master's degree program designed to recruit, prepare and retain outstanding teachers for urban schools. This tuition-supported graduate teacher preparation program provides an affordable way for top college graduates and career-changers to become outstanding teachers specifically in and for high-priority schools. Within one calendar year, Boettcher Residents will earn: a Colorado Teaching License and a master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction (with an emphasis in Urban Education) from the Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver. The Program includes $10,000 stipend during the teaching residency year as well as extensive mentoring and coaching for success in urban schools via program faculty and district induction programs. The program takes five years to complete, and residents are awarded half tuition in exchange for a commitment to teach in low-income schools in the metro Denver area. In the first year of the program, the teacher residency year, residents receive a $10,000 stipend and complete licensure requirements. In years two through five, residents are full-time, salaried teachers. By the beginning of year two, residents have earned their master’s degree; and by the end of year five, they have satisfied their teaching service obligation. Boettcher Teaching Residents are specially trained to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students, and earn a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Denver, as well as a Colorado teaching license from the Colorado Department of Education. Fellowship: This fellowship covers half of the costs of University of Denver tuition and program fees (residents are responsible for $15,000), provided that the resident continues teaching in approved high-priority schools in Colorado for a total of five years (including residency year). No previous teaching experience is necessary. Licensure/Content areas include: Elementary Education (grades K-6 license), Primary (K-2) and Upper Elementary (3-5), Secondary Education (grades 7-12) in the following content areas: Science and Mathematics. Highly desirable candidates will have a desire to attain licensure as a public school teacher and earn a master’s degree while working with children in high needs schools. Accreditation: . Eligibility Requirements: - Have earned a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution by start of program (Spring 2012) - Be able to work legally in the U.S. - Have proficiency in English at the graduate school level - Have a Statement of Eligibility or an initial license from the Colorado Department of Education - Be academically qualified (by June 2012) in the licensure area sought, based upon the Colorado Department of Education subject area requirements for Alternative Teacher Licensure (visit www.cde.state.co.us for more information) - Pass the teacher content knowledge exam (either the PLACE or Praxis II) for the discipline they wish to teach
